Engagement: we can use the same roadmap to analyze Engagement. For this conception, two major assumptions must be highlighted: First, this strategy is frequently associated with arms control procedure. When the disarmament involves two nuclear great powers, the aim is to shift from the search of the “superiority” to the state of “sufficiency” to end an unproductive and dangerous arms competition. Second, the use of incentives alongside the strengthening of relationship lead toward a more collaborative manner of containing or resolving conflicts. The basic disadvantage of this strategy is that its implementation is complex and difficult but its result is to reduce the tension. Furthermore, the achievement or the breakdown of an engagement strategy correctly implemented is roughly the consequence of the target’s initiative rather than that of luck. To sum up, the aim of an engagement strategy initiated by a great nuclear power is to generate strategic stability characterized by crisis stability and arms race stability.
